Minimalism design is flourishing the world over, and it’s found its way to colorful Key West. Tucked away in a gated garden compound, this Key West Contemporary Caribbean Townhome recently received a sophisticated white-on-white make-over and the result is stunning. Here we find a unique juxtaposition of Classic Old Town architecture with modern minimalist interior design. The traditional Key West wooden front porch is brightly painted in coral and Caribbean blue. The interior is completely the opposite – monochromatic and ethereal, with just a touch of beachy color. The combination of the two designs makes a dynamic contrast that works perfectly together.

Beyond the aesthetic beauty of this Contemporary Caribbean Townhome, its location and amenities are highly sought after. A serene refuge from busy downtown Old Town streets, here you enjoy the luxury of traffic-free surroundings with a gorgeous swimming pool garden for your front yard. Set in the small exclusive gated compound of Grinnell Gardens, there’s only a few neighbors who share the common pool and garden. And when you want to be outside with privacy, no problem! There’s an elegant fenced-in back yard, beautifully staged as a garden sitting room complete with BBQ grill.

INTERIOR LAYOUT

Downstairs: The home is entered from the front porch. The front door leads directly into the wide-open great room. At once tranquil and uplifting, the expansive bright-white space is filled with light from multiple windows, glass doors and ceiling lights. Light wood floors are laid lengthwise, making the room feel even larger. When you step inside, your eye is immediately drawn to the back of the house, where a wall of sliding glass doors provides an alluring view of the back garden.

The great room spans the depth of the house. From the front door it flows from the living room, to the dining room, and the kitchen at the back of house. Comfort is key, and the living room grouping features a large cushy white sofa with chaise, perfect for lounging, reading, or watching the 55-inch flat screen TV. On the wall next to the TV console, you’ll see the door that leads to the down-stairs half-bath.

Beyond the living room grouping, the dining room area offers a long dark wood dining table contrasted with 8 white-washed cross-back dining chairs. Modern pendant ceiling lights are hung over the dining table to perfectly light up the dining experience.

The elegant kitchen is strategically situated opposite the dining table for easy serving and entertaining. Upper and lower bright white cabinets are contrasted with shiny black granite countertops and backsplash. Stainless-steel appliances and hardware compliment the monochromatic look. A sleek glass stove top and built-in oven fit seamlessly into the cabinet on one side of the kitchen. The full-size French door refrigerator is on the opposite end. The triangle layout between the stove, fridge, and sink, plus ample counter space, make it a pleasure for even the most particular cook to work in.  

Minimal beach-themed artwork decorating one wall and turquoise rattan chair add a splash of color against the white room. The only other touch of color is the brown wood dining table and TV console table, which add a warm and welcoming feel. The final look is a sophisticated, serene, wide-open room perfectly harmonious and functional.

Upstairs: The bedrooms and bathrooms of this Contemporary Caribbean Townhome are on the 2nd floor. The white-on-white décor, with light wood floors is carried upstairs to all rooms. Our slide show begins with the master bedroom with en-suite bathroom.

Master Bedroom with en-suite bath -  Located at the end of the hallway, at the front of the house, the master bedroom is stylishly furnished with a king size bed in a bronze metal bed frame, matching dark wood bureau, and light rattan chair and bedside tables. A reach-in closet, with louvered doors, offers plenty of room. This bedroom is filled with natural sunlight with three sash windows plus the French door leading to the 2nd floor covered porch overlooking the pool and common gardens. The porch is furnished with seating for 4, plus a bistro table – a great place to start the day with morning coffee.

The en-suite master bathroom is made elegant with tumbled marble white tile and a marble vanity top. The white vanity provides an oversized mirror that spans the width of the countertop. The shower is double size with frameless glass doors. A large sash window and designer lighting assure plenty of light.

Bedroom Two –  Back into the bedroom hallway from the master suite, bedroom two is located at the end of the hall on the right, at the northeast corner. Offering a queen size bed, this serene bedroom is minimally furnished with a white bureau and step in closet. As a corner room, it provides three sash windows which invite the sunlight in.

Bunk Room – An adorable nautical themed bunk room offers additional sleeping space. Reminiscent of a bedroom on a luxury yacht it features custom built-in wooden twin-size bunk beds, with ladder and railings painted bright white. There is also a white bureau and clothes tree for hanging minimal items – there is not a closet. Situated at the back of the house, there is one sash window  with a beautiful view of the fenced in back garden downstairs outside the house.

Bathroom Two – Located off the bedroom hall, this bright white full bathroom has direct access from bedroom two and the bunk room. It provides a standard size bathtub with in-tub shower. The floor and shower walls are tiled, and the vanity provides a single sink, with under storage, and wall mirror. Recessed ceiling lights, vanity lights, and a sash window provide plenty of light.  

GROUNDS

To enjoy the outside grounds, we are returning to the 1st floor and begin by walking to the back of the house to see the private garden. A tall white picket fence sets the quintessential Key West tone. Palm trees, tropical landscaping,  modern outdoor furniture, and a BBQ grill create a tropical garden room. A cute sigh on the fence is set as a reminder that “All You Need is LOVE and The Beach,” which is not a problem. From here you are only 5 short blocks (5 minutes) walk to Higgs Beach!

Before we finish our tour, we return to the outside front of the house. As we walk to the pool, take note of the covered front porch set with a bistro table and chairs. From the front porch we have a direct view of the swimming pool. The shared full-size swimming pool has a trickling water fall and banister stairs making it easy to enter the pool. The spacious pool deck is furnished with chaise lounges and tables for outdoor poolside dining.

GATED COMPOUND ENTRANCE AND PARKING

The Grinnell Gardens Compound is completely fenced with locking gates and a covered gatehouse at the entrance. Landscaped with mature palm trees and tall native plants, this gated neighborhood is set back off the street, to create parking. It seems to blend in so well, that people often pass it by without taking notice.

Activities: Higgs Beach is a very short stroll away where you can enjoy white sands, turquoise waters, and historic piers. Louie's Back Yard and Dog Beach is also close by. Within 5-minute stroll to White Street Pier, West Martello Fort, tennis courts near the beach, Key West famous Salute Restaurant on Higgs Beach, Casa Marina Resort property, Fausto’s Fine Grocery Store, Sandy’s Café walk up restaurant and Cuban coffee, local art galleries, and weather station. Walk or bike to most Key West Old Town attractions.

Area: On the border of the Casa Marina neighborhood. This is a small exclusive residential district which has grown into one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Old Town Key West. In the mid 1900's this area was considered the "countryside" of the island, and the modern-day result leaves a legacy of outstanding turn-of-the-century, mid-century and modern architecture with beautiful gardens and more yard space than is typically found in the other residential districts in Old Town Key West. Quiet residential area, close to the Atlantic Ocean and the White Street gallery and shopping area.

Parking: There is one designated off-street parking place in front of the compound
