From the front yard, this spacious Key West Family Cottage Villa appears to be a small historic Key West Caribbean cottage. But as it turns out, its charming front porch and saltbox roofline are merely the original façade to a 2,000 square foot spacious villa. Originally built in 1958, the house received a major redesign in 2014 to create an expansive 4 BR 3 BA home. The home was rebuilt and casually furnished by the owner to offer all the sought after features of comfortable Key West New Town living.
The focal point of this Key West rental house is the light-filled open-concept great room that runs the entire length of the house. Divided into three main living areas, it provides a nicely staged living room area with entertainment center in the front, a roomy dining room area toward the back, and in the middle, it features a custom designed chef’s kitchen. Multiple windows and recessed ceiling lights assure plenty of sunshine and nighttime light. Terracotta tile floors throughout and central a/c are ideal for the tropical lifestyle. All rooms have one or more windows to bring in the natural light. A spacious yard is completely fenced all the way around. Off-street parking in a private driveway is a bonus.
Situated in the New Town neighborhood, here you are living on a quiet street as a local resident. A place to settle in and enjoy the family island lifestyle – a wonderful home for professionals to work remotely. Walk your dog and bicycle around the wide streets and enjoy the convenience of nearby shopping. No place is faraway on the tiny island of Key West so it's minutes to get to the beach and downtown Old Town.
Great Room: We begin our tour at the front of the house in the living room area. Nicely furnished, with walls painted linen white, the living room features an oversize U-shape soft-gray sofa with chaise, providing ample seating for everyone. A large flat screen TV and bookcase, stocked with books and games, make this the lounging and entertainment center – the perfect arrangement to watch movies, play video games, or flop down to read or nap.
Next in line, past the living room area, is the kitchen. The centerpiece of the great room, the large custom U-shape design commands a full view of the entire space. The kitchen is well equipped for cooking and provides an electric stove with oven, dishwasher, refrigerator / freezer, and microwave. Light wood cabinetry with granite counter tops provide ample room for inspired cooking, serving meals, and setting up a bar.
When it’s time to sit down together for a meal, the roomy dining room area is just past the kitchen. From the dining table, you enjoy a nice view of the back yard through the single pane French doors. This also makes the table an ideal place to sit with a laptop, play a boardgame or put together a puzzle. A lovely architectural feature of this room is the cathedral ceiling and transom windows above the wall between the kitchen and dining area that invite in the sunlight.
BEDROOMS AND BATHROOMS:
The Key West Family Cottage Villa offers a split floorplan, adding privacy as well as functionality. We start at the front of the house, where two bedrooms and one bath are accessed off the hallway between the living room and kitchen.
As you enter the front hall, bedroom one is immediately to the right. Painted a soft Key lime green, it provides traditional furnishings with a white metal queen size bed, wooden bedside tables and bureau, built-in corner shelves, and a closet. In our slideshow it is shown with a green and yellow pattern quilt. Directly across the hall is a full bathroom with a sand tone tiled oversized shower and free-standing sink.
At the end of the front hall is bedroom two. Painted in light blue, it is shown here as a child’s room with a twin bed, built-in shelving, and a closet. It is possible to reset this bedroom with two twin beds or a desk, depending on the needs of renter.
Returning to the back of the house to the dining area, a hall to the right leads to the 2nd suite of bedrooms and bathrooms. The master bedroom and en-suite bathroom are accessed through the first door on the left. Painted in pale coral, the master suite provides a king size bed, traditional bureau and bedside tables, and ample closet space. It is shown in our slideshow with a soft green and coral patterned quilt.
Situated at the back of the house, the master bedroom also offers a private exterior door that leads to the backyard deck. The en-suite master bath has an oversize shower with soft green and white tiles, and a single sink with vanity and storage.
Back into the hall, we view the fourth bedroom and third bathroom. Both the bedroom and bathroom on this side of the house, benefit from the architectural beauty of soaring ceilings and transom windows set in the tall walls.
The door for the fourth bedroom is at end of the hall. It is furnished as an adorable child’s room with a single bed in a white metal bedframe and white shelving.
Finally, the third bathroom is just out the door of bedroom four. Painted light blue, here you have a bathtub with tiled in-tub shower, and a double wooden vanity with a single sink.
The house is ideally set back off the street. The private driveway is paved with bricks, and a quintessential Key West white picket fence surrounds the front and side yards. In the backyard a large wooden patio deck is set with a dining table and chairs. Built up level to the floor of the house, a set of single pane French doors connect seamlessly with the dining room area to enjoy indoor / outdoor living. A laundry closet with a full-size washer and dryer is hidden by wooden louvered doors, and conveniently accessed right outside the French doors.
Set on a 5,000 square foot lot, this home provides a great deal space by Key West standards. One of the nicest features of this property is the large, completely fenced in yard with play grass – big enough for children and a pet to run around in the fresh air and sunshine! A combination of mature native and tropical trees line the perimeter of the yard.
One of the things I love most about this Key West Family Cottage Villa is the abundance of comfort but lack of pretentiousness. The design is well thought out and every room is furnished for practicality and enjoyment. In this Key West rental, you will live like a local, and you just may never want to leave.
