Top of The House ~ Near the Seaport is a delightfully renovated three-bedroom one-bathroom hideaway, with swimming pool, that encompasses the entire 2nd floor of a historic Key West wooden house. From this location you’re only four streets from the famous wharf where the old schooners, charter boats, and luxury yachts dock. A testimony to its vintage, this charming 19th century seaport building displays an intriguing sawtooth roof - a succession of three gable roofs with valleys in between - which accentuates the historic relevance of the house.
The sawtooth roof style not only creates an esthetic jagged profile, it allowed for a creative interior design when the 2nd floor was renovated to be a separate unit to meet luxury lifestyle standards. By tucking the ceiling up to the original rafters, and transforming loadbearing beams to become architectural shelving, the 19th craftsmanship was artistically recreated as a private luxury flat by the 21st builders. It’s fun that the roof also has an original scuttle (or roof hatch), like those you find on the deck of a wooden ship, a testimony to the seafaring carpenters that originally built it.
The property curb appeal exudes tropical charm, with a tin tile roof, white picket fence, and colorful landscaping. Top of the House ~ Near the Seaport, is the 2nd floor flat and it is easily accessed through the front gate, and down a path along the right side of the house, as you face it. As you head down the path, take a moment to admire the unique garden pavers that make an esthetical statement of what’s to come. Hundreds of vintage cast iron water meter covers have been installed in the ground as ‘stepping stone’ pavers in front and along the side of the house. Midway down the side of the building, four steps lead to the exterior entrance to the top of the house. Step inside, and an interior staircase leads to your flat.
At the top of the stairs, the landing is decorated with a console for dropping your keys and phone and settling in. The landing steps directly into the open concept great-room. Here, two sets of single-pane French doors at the back of the room, seamlessly integrate the indoors with the covered back porch, making a beautiful setting for the indoor/outdoor living that Key West is known for. Porch ceiling fans and outdoor furniture makes a relaxing outdoor room for and having a drink and snack. From this 2nd floor vantage point, you have a clear view of the pool, deck, and tropical garden below.
Back inside, between the French doors, a round glass-top dining table is set with four chairs. With your back to the French doors, you have a complete view of the great-room, with the living room grouping on the right and the kitchen on the left. The entire flat was given a white back-drop, with decorator white paint and light planked wood flooring laid throughout. The living room area incorporates tropical colors with a sea-blue leather sofa and two wicker chairs to match. A bar height counter creates a room divider between the living room and kitchen.
The walk-through kitchen is sleekly designed in shades of white-on-white. Bright white Corian countertops on both sides, molded-in double sinks, high-end upper and lower blonde wood cabinetry, free-standing gas stove, overhead space-saver microwave, dishwasher, top freezer refrigerator, overhead lighting, and a stock of kitchen equipment provide everything you need to cook. The pass-through kitchen leads to the bedrooms and bath. But before we peek at these rooms, if you’re interested in architecture, cue into the photo of the living room and notice the double triangle shape that pucks out of the corner between the sofa and wicker chairs. A necessary outcome from accommodating the saw tooth roof line, this became an interesting design element in the renovation that is also found on the opposite of the wall in bedroom one.
Back into the kitchen, we walk through it to reach the small hallway connecting with the bathroom, and the three bedrooms. Now we are facing toward the front of the building, and immediately to your left is the full bathroom. Also done in white-on-white, the bathroom provides a vanity with white granite counter top, large wall vanity mirror, blonde wood storage tower with cabinets and drawers, stone pattern tiles, recessed and sconce lighting, and a bathtub with in-tub shower that has earth-tone tumble tiles.
Back into the hall, we access all three bedrooms, where each is built out with hardwood floors, recessed ceiling lighting, small closets and one sash window to let in plenty of day light. Bedroom one, which provides a queen size bed, is directly across the hall from the bathroom. Notable architectural features of this bedroom are the single pane French door, wood floors, two custom transom windows and the opposite side of the double triangle shape we see in the living room. This bedroom also has a laundry closet with a stacking washer and dryer.
Returning to the hall, take one small step down, and we find bedroom two straight ahead to the right. This bedroom offers a twin size (single bed). The peaked ceiling, unique built-in wood topped shelf on one side of the bed are notable architectural features of this room. In our slide show the room is shown with a pedestal globe and brass candle lantern placed on the built-in shelf and it is decorated with wicker furnishings.
Stepping back into the hall on the left, is the master bedroom, which provides a queen size bed. Shown in our slide show with a white wicker chair and side table at the window, this bedroom also has a wood topped built-in shelf, a peaked ceiling and features a unique roof hatch that opens through the roof.
While this flat is on the 2nd floor of the building, downstairs in the back yard, it provides exclusive use of the swimming pool. The backyard pool deck is completely tiled in white sand-stone tiles. White picket fences and lush landscaping surrounds the property. Chaise lounges and a BBQ grill are place for your use. There is a back gate that leads from the pool deck to a charming lane.

You’re nearby several great restaurants, just few streets from the famous Key West Historic Seaport where you can experience the docks and find just about any kind of water sport you want to try. Take a sunset sail, enjoy the historic schooner ships, take a dive trip to the reef, charter a sport fishing boat. Discover a wonderful variety of fresh seafood and steak restaurants, the one-of-a-kind waterfront Schooner Wharf Bar. Famous Duval Street is just 3 ½ streets away (remember it takes 3 to 4 Key West streets to equal the distance of a typical city block).Walk to all old town features, including museums, theaters, night life. Walk to Mallory Square Sunset Celebration in about 15 minutes.
Area: This house is in the original Historic Seaport Neighborhood of Old Town Key West on the gulf side of the island. Here the founding fathers and mothers, pirates and opportunistic mariners of the late 1800’s and 1900’s homes that stand today as one of the largest and most impressive collection of turn-of-the-century wooden architecture. From larger Victorians to charming shot gun cottages, many of these alluring structures have been restored and renovated to stand in their gleaming glory.
Parking: Parking for this property is on the street. If you bring a car, we recommend that you park it in the City of Key West Old Town Garage, which is close by on Caroline St. From the location of this flat, you do not need a car to enjoy old town. Enjoy walking or biking everywhere you'll see more that way.
