Man on the beach of key west wearing a rain coat before it starts to rain

The rainy season is fast upon us here in Key West, Florida. This afternoon, the clouds have gathered and its raining cats and dogs here on the island. We know the story, you had already planned your trip and found all the attractions and adventures you imagined doing while here in the Southernmost City. But, you did not expect the 3 inches of rain the current tropical system is dumping on the island. Never fear VHKW is here with 10 ways you can beat those Key West rainy day blues.

Tropic Cinema Sign at night Key West

#1 - Go to the movies!

We know this ones obvious! Old Town Key West has it's very own movie theater, Tropic Cinema. Located just a half block off Duval street on Eaton, Tropic Cinema shows films from around the world including international and independant films as well as big blockbuster movies from Hollywood. #2-  The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory

Indoor attraction fun at The Key West Butterfly & Nature Conservatory. This large indoor conservatory is home to flamingoes, turtles, tropical birds and more butterflies than you can count. A great place to take the family but is also a romantic to wander through. See more about this attraction here: https://www.keywestbutterfly.com/

Prana Spa in Key West Fl

#3- A Spa Day All To Yourself

The tropical rainstorms that come through Key West have a very calming effect on some. Take advantage of this and book an appointment at a local spa. Imagine being pampered while soothing rain falls, dancing on the tin roofs. We suggest looking into Prana Spa located conveniently on Whitehead, close to many of our vacation rentals.  See more here.

#4- Duval Crawl Duval Doggie Paddle

Most visitors are familiar with the Duval Crawl a day spent drinking your way through some of the world renown dive bars lining Duval Street. This parade from bar to bar is still a lot of fun when done under umbrella and raincoats. Starting on one end and making your way to the other is a favorite challenge for the season Duval crawler. See a list of  our favorite bars & restaurants here:

#5 Key West Porch Sitting

If you?ve rented a vacation rental house or cottage, chances are good you have a front sitting porch to enjoy.  The front porch is the perfect place to wait out a rain storm and watch the world of Key West go by.  When you?'ve had enough of lounging around the house, you?ll find several establishments downtown that serve wine, beer, or cocktails on outdoor covered porches. Three of my favorites are the Grand Vin Porch on Duval Street for wine sipping, The Porch on Caroline Street for exotic beers, and Louie?s Back Yard on the ocean on Waddell Street for a cocktail.

Melfisher's Treasure Museum front view

#6 Melfisher's Treasure Museum

The Mel Fisher Maritime Museum Key West is dedicated to Mel Fisher (and his crew’s) recovery of sunken treasure ships. Mel Fisher is most renowned for the recovery of the Neustra Señora de Atocha, a Spanish treasure galleon than sunk in 1622 while passing through the Florida Straits. This is a great place to spend a few hours surrounded by millions of dollars worth of sunken treasure. Great place for history buffs and there is also a gift shop and jewelry store where you can get your hands on some of the recovered artifacts. Tickest & information here: http://www.melfisher.org/

Tide Pool at Key West Aquarium

#7 Key West Aquarium

This Key West Attraction is one of the longest operating tourist destinations in the Florida Keys. Perhaps one of the most unique aquariums in the world, the Key West Aquarium has delighted visitors since 1934. There are some areas that are outdoors but you will find the interior exhibits and large pools are very interesting. See more about visiting the aquarium here: https://www.keywestaquarium.com/

TheWaterfront Brewery is the only brewery in Key West. Take one of their guided tours and get an up close look at the production. Not only fun for your favorite brewmaster. The Waterfront Brewery is located in the Historic Key West Seaport and has a commanding view of the harbour. Enjoy a dry seat while you sample the locally brewed beers and tasty food. After a cold one try you hand at one of their 50 arcade games. The game room is fun for the whole family with many old school games like air hockey and ski-ball as well as newer video games. See more about the brewery here: http://www.thewaterfrontbrewery.com/

#9 Ride The Trolly in The Rain

Yes, thats right. Ride the Oldtown Trolly in the rain. Unlike the Conch Tour Train this local tour takes place under the cover of the trolly. You can still get a good look at most attractions, even with bad weather. The Trolly's also offer hop-on, hop-off service, with stops around the island. The dry ride makes this an excellent way to get around while exploring in the rain. See more about booking a ride here: https://www.trolleytours.com/key-west
