What to Pack for Your Key West Vacation

With a unique mix of beaches, museums, and a vibrant nightlife, packing for a Key West vacation may seem a little daunting, but don’t worry — we’ve got you covered!

Whether you’re planning on spending most of your time at the beach, on Duval Street, or just lounging around the pool at your own private vacation rental, you don’t need to pack much to enjoy Key West. However, there are a few essential items that will help keep you cool, comfortable, and ready for anything the island throws at you.

Here’s your complete guide to packing for Key West, plus a few tips from the locals to make the most out of your trip!

What to Pack for Key West: The Ultimate List

Let’s start with the basics — here are some tried and true items to add to your Key West packing list!

  • Bathing suits/beachwear: A must-have for visiting the beaches, lounging at the pool, water excursions, and more. We recommend bringing at least two bathing suits in case one is still drying while you’re gearing up for your next adventure.
  • Sun protection: The sun is strong in Key West, so sunglasses, hats, and reef-safe sunscreen are a must!
  • Flip-flops: Flip-flops are the go-to shoe for pretty much everywhere in Key West, and of course, you’ll need them for the beach or pool.
  • Water shoes: Great to have for the beach or if you plan to shore snorkel in places like Fort Zachary Taylor Beach, known for its rocky water.
  • Casual clothes: Think shorts, T-shirts, tank tops, athleisure, and breezy, comfortable pieces for walking around Duval Street and sightseeing.
  • Walking shoes: Key West is a very walkable city, so comfy walking sneakers or sandals are a must. Flip flops are great for the beach and lounging around, but you’ll also want to bring something with a little support for those long days of sightseeing.
  • Daily bag: Leave the fancy handbags at home; a small beach tote or backpack will be all you’ll need to carry your daily essentials.
  • Resort wear: If you plan on doing any upscale dining, you might want to bring a few dressier pieces, which, for Key West, means resort-casual, like sundresses, linen pants, polo shirts, etc.
  • Beach towels: A must-bring if your stay doesn’t offer them. Pro tip — lighten your load by staying in a vacation home that offers beach towels.
  • Rain gear: A lightweight rain jacket, poncho, or umbrella to keep in your bag for afternoon showers can come in handy, especially in the summer.
  • Mosquito repellent: A must-have in humid, tropical spots like Key West, especially when visiting in the warmer, rainier months, during dawn and dusk, and if you’ll be hanging out around the mangroves.
  • A light jacket or light sweater: Perfect for those cool, windy mornings and evenings, especially if you’re visiting in the winter.
  • Waterproof phone case: A must-have to keep your phone safe during water excursions; preferably, pick one with a floatie attached in case it goes overboard.
  • Portable charging bank: Optional, but nice to have if you’ll be out all day sightseeing and want to keep your phone or camera charged.
  • Medications and toiletries: Be sure to bring any medications and toiletries you might need. Pro tip — bring some leave-in conditioner and a good moisturizer to help protect your hair and skin from the sun, salt, and chlorine.

If you forget anything, don’t worry! There are plenty of shops in Key West that have everything you might need and then some.

Key West Packing Tips

While we’ve given you a good base to get started on your packing, here are a few extra things to consider.

Consider the Season

Seasons run a bit differently in the Florida Keys. If you’re used to visiting beach towns like those you’ll find up north, in the Carolinas, or on the California coast, you might be in for a surprise when visiting Key West, which is more akin to an island in the Caribbean. Translation: it might have you “feeling hot, hot, hot” — steel drums not included!

Key West has a tropical climate, which means warm, sunny weather year-round and two main seasons: dry and rainy. The dry season runs from about November to May and features cooler temperatures, lower humidity and rainfall, and no threat of hurricanes. The tropical wet season runs from about April to October and is characterized by warmer temperatures, higher humidity, and frequent rain; it also coincides with the Atlantic Hurricane Season.

While your main vacation wardrobe can pretty much stay the same year-round, there are a few items you might want to add to your bag depending on the weather forecast. For instance, adding extra layers can come in handy for cooler nights during the dry season, and carrying a rain jacket or poncho will help you stay dry during those afternoon showers in the rainy season.

Pack for Activities

There are so many things to do in Key West, so it’s always a good idea to pack comfortable, versatile items. However, if you know you’ll be spending your time doing certain activities, be sure to pack accordingly.

If you plan to spend most of your time out on the water while boating, kayaking, snorkeling, fishing, etc., consider bringing extra sun protection. Items like rashguards, long-sleeve sun shirts, wide-brimmed hats, and polarized sunglasses will help keep you a bit more protected than just a standard bathing suit. A waterproof bag or “dry bag” can also come in handy if you’ll be on a boat, kayak, or paddleboard.

If you have your own SCUBA diving or snorkel gear that you prefer to use over rentals, feel free to bring that too.

Check the Vibes

Some people come to Key West thinking it’s like Miami, but it’s much, much more casual. Don’t get us wrong, you can still dress to impress if you want, but even in the nicest restaurants and hottest nightclubs in town, you’re bound to see shorts and sandals, and maybe even a few roosters running around on the patio.

Save room in your suitcase and leave the jeans, jackets, and heels at home. Instead, opt for resort-casual pieces, such as linen pants, sundresses, khakis, and polo shirts. And don’t be afraid to make it fun. Have a Jimmy Buffett-style floral button-down you never have anywhere to wear? Key West is the perfect place.

Overall, the vibe of Key West is casual, fun, and free-spirited, so dress comfortably, and when in doubt, less is usually more!

Bring Flair for the Festivals

If you’re heading to Key West for a festival, you might want to leave room in your bag for a little extra flair. Whether it’s Fantasy Fest, 4th of July, or one of the many pirate-themed parties you’ll find for New Year’s Eve or the Conch Republic Independence Celebration, Key West loves to play dress up — so don’t be afraid to bring a costume (or two!) that matches the theme of the celebration.
