Fantasy Fest 2011 ~ Vacation Homes of Key West
“Fantasy Fest 2011 is over now. It’s time to kiss our ‘ghoulish fetishes’ goodbye til next year.”
It just ended last night, only several hours ago as I write this. The awesome City of Key West maintenance department is now cleaning up Duval Street behind the big Saturday night Fantasy Fest parade. It’s always amazing how fast Duval Street is restored to everyday order! By the time I head downtown for my early morning Cuban coffee, the streets will be all clear.
From nearly all accounts Key West Fantasy Fest was a huge success this year. Thank goodness the storm didn’t come to Key West. Threats of a hurricane looming always add some anxiety – The question looms in the back of the mind … ‘Will they make us evacuate in the middle the week’s festivities?’
There were lots of bare breasts this year and some people got annoyed by that. But hey, the theme was Aquatic Frolic, and this is billed as an adult party after all. Who ever saw a mermaid with a top on anyway? There were lots of tamer costumes too, and not everyone stuck with the theme. (That’s not a requirement!) Scary ones like zombies, beautiful head dresses and gorgeous dancers in tutus, a small troop of body painted blue smurfs, and a ‘dead mermaid’ riding a bicycle! Even the local pets joined in on the fun with their beloved owners at the annual Pet Masquerade – this year even included a goldfish?
The party’s over for 2011 and for the moment at least, it’s back to ‘Key West business as usual.’
