Just behind the curving waterfront of Key West's picturesque harbor lies the 19th century Historic Seaport Neighborhood. It is here where grand wooden gingerbread homes, built by early seafaring merchant's, line the narrow island streets punctuated with blocks of white picket fences with capital posts. Today the history of this unique architecture is often under-appreciated.
Most do not realize that the bravest of these early home builders were 18th Century British loyalist settlers of the Bahamas, who created an established sailing route between sleepy Green Turtle Cay Bahamas and the bustling island of Key West. Seamen who chose to settle in Key West, hand-crafted colonial style houses that remined them of home, adapting the structures to suit tropical island life. The exterior of this estate home is a classic representation of Key West-Colonial-Bahamian architecture.
Now a focal point on a prominent corner of the Key West Historic Seaport neighborhood, this house recently received a major upscale renovation. The historic gingerbread exterior was completely restored, a pool and in-ground Jacuzzi were added in the back yard, and the interior was modernized as a masterpiece of handsome design.
INTERIOR LAYOUT - DOWNSTAIRS:
True to symmetrical Colonial form, the front door entrance is set in the center of the house with paired windows on either side. Originally built of original heart-pine wood, the interior was re-fit to be grand with polished Brazilian tigerwood floors, rich mahogany doors and window casings. Stunning mahogany beam ceilings and crown molding on 12-foot ceilings give the first floor a stately elegance.
Entrance: A classic Victorian staircase defines the grand entrance to The Grand Marshall House ~ Key West vacation rental. The staircases in Key West historic estate homes are all a little bit unique and it’s worth taking a few minutes to admire the polished mahogany railing, intricately carved outer string, and hand lathed post of this one. A traditional Persian style runner-rug tops the steps and risers that lead straight up to the 2nd floor. But before we look upstairs, let's tour the ground level.
Living / Dining / Kitchen - Directly to the left of the staircase leads to the grand great-room. This spacious open concept living / dining/ kitchen area occupies nearly the entire left side and back of the downstairs. The living room grouping is staged at the front of the house. It is tastefully and comfortably furnished with an upscale coastal style grouping of a sofa, love seat, and barrel easy chairs upholstered in soft island blue and coral colors. There is a 50-inch flat-screen TV for your viewing pleasure.
Straight to the back of the house, you’ll see the large mahogany dining table and 8 chairs. But before we go in there, let’s peek at the luxurious office that is accessed through a door left of the dining room area.
Furnished with handsome mahogany built-in furniture with earth-tone textured granite tops, the large office space will be appreciated by any writer, discerning executive, corporate group, or family members that prefer a separate working space. Built-in storage shelves on one wall provide plenty of room to keep your stuff in order, and three large sash windows on another wall bring in the natural daylight. Pocket French doors slide closed for privacy and quiet, while you still can keep an eye on what is going on.
Returning to the dining room, you’ll notice the sliding glass doors to your left, leading to the covered porch and pool deck. But before we go outside, let’s consider the important features of the dining room. Built into the outside wall, just beyond the sliding glass door, is propane indoor/outdoor fireplace that can be viewed and enjoyed from the dining room and the back deck. The dining table seats eight, plus an additional square-top table has four more chairs - so in total you can comfortably host twelve for a sit-down dinner party. A large open square arch near the table for four, provides passage to the kitchen.
Encompassing half of the back of the house, the gourmet kitchen is beautifully staged to please any serious cook with wooden cabinets, granite counter tops, and top-of-the-line stainless steel appliances. An artistic star tile feature is set in the center of the kitchen floor, adding richness to the room. Two sash windows over the kitchen sink bring in the sun and provide a view of the deck covered porch and pool area. The cook will appreciate the breakfast counter for early morning serving, as well as the additional cabinet with a wine cooler and extra fridge below. Around the corner from the refrigerator, a walk-in laundry room with additional storage, is conveniently located. A French door leads from the kitchen to the outdoor covered porch, deck, and pool. But before we go outside and look at the pool deck details, lets complete the tour of the interior.
Bedroom One and Downstairs Bathroom - Back into the dining room, facing toward the front of the house, you'll see the door that leads to the downstairs bedroom. This spacious 1st floor bedroom can be accessed through two doors – one off the dining room, and the other is at right of the front door entrance. Furnished with a king size bed, the cream-colored walls, white wooden coastal style headboard, end tables, and bureau, are in nice contrast to the dark wood floor and trim and wooden wardrobe.Step back into the dining room, and directly across the room, is the 1st floor full bathroom. This bathroom provides a bathtub with in-tub shower with clear glass sliding doors, tiled floor, and vanity with granite counter top. Glass back-splash tiles and black lavatory fixtures add an elegant touch.
INTERIOUR LAYOUT - UPSTAIRS:
Master Bedroom (bedroom two) and Bathroom - Back to the front door entrance of the house, the staircase leads straight up to the 2nd floor where you'll find three spacious bedrooms and two bathrooms. At the top of the stairs, turn right, then immediately to your left and you’ll see the private hall leading to the master bedroom and bathroom. Furnished with upscale white-washed coastal style furnishings, the master bedroom provides a king size bed with matching headboard, bedside tables, and bureau. A large flat-screen TV is placed above the bureau for easy viewing from bed. A stylish bench upholstered in green to match the bedroom walls, is placed at the foot of the bed.
This bedroom was delightfully redesigned. The soaring ceiling is finished with white pickled wood planks set up to the rafters. Double side-by-side clothes closets are set on one end of the room. Walls are painted tropical green with wood trim painted white. Sash windows on 3 sides fill the room with light, and light bamboo floors complete the tropical feeling. A special feature of the master bedroom is an adjoining private deck that overlooks the swimming pool and deck below.
Directly outside the master bedroom door, is the master bath. Proximity to the bedroom makes it function as an en-suite master bathroom, even though you take a few steps into the private hall to reach it. Consistently grand as the rest of this home, the master bath is very spacious and provides two oversized wood vanities with granite countertops, across the room from each other. A special feature is a steam-room shower at the far end of the room. A large sash window looks down at the pool and deck below, and a fun unexpected feature is the automatic opening toilet seat. It gave us a real chuckle the first time we saw it function.
Bedroom Three and Bedroom Four – Stepping back into the common hall at the top of the stairs, the doorways to the other two bedrooms are on opposite sides of the house. The door to bedroom three is located closest to the master bedroom, while bedroom four is accessed off the main upstairs hallway at the opposite end of the house. Both bedrooms were redesigned and decorated to mirror each other, with light hardwood floors, thick crown molding, and decorator ceiling fans. Set to maximize sleeping accommodations, both bedrooms are furnished with two double beds, bedside tables, and dressers, Both bedrooms have flat screen TV’s mounted on the wall.
Upstairs Bathroom Two – The entrance to the second upstairs bathroom is across the hall from bedroom four. This bathroom provides a tiled shower with bench and frameless glass door. The high-toned room is made to feel light and airy with a white vanity topped with cream-tone granite and tile. Upscale bathroom fixtures and a black vanity mirror are the final touch.
Back in the main bedroom hallway at the top of the staircase, there is a walk way leading to the front upstairs of the house. A single-pane French door leads to the 2nd floor verandah that runs the entire width of the front of the house and wraps around the northeast side of the building.
Front and Side - The property grounds are fenced all the way around the house with classic white picket fences and mature landscaping in the back for privacy. On the front and northeast side of the house, large covered verandahs, on the 1st and 2nd floor, wrap around from the front of the home to the northeast side to create enviable views of historic Fleming and Frances streets. Ample easy and rocking chairs are placed to maximize your comfort.
Back Yard - During the renovation of the home, double decks were built on the back of the property. The 2nd floor deck is private to the master bedroom. Directly below it, the 1st floor deck leads to the kitchen and dining area which easily flow from one space to another.
