Part of the fun is getting here, so we introduce our slide-show tour with the water taxi arrival to Sunset Key. The five minute boat ride is short and sweet, yet tantalizing enough so that you get the sense of being transported away to somewhere special and glamorous. When you arrive on the island, the shore has the air of an exclusive beach estate somewhere in the Bahamas. Long boat-house style landing dock, private white sandy beaches, manicured landscaping, and set off to your right, amidst the coconut palms, a classic island colonial mansion-style structure, which houses reception, the restaurant, and resort amenities.

We don’t stop here, as our destination is a private beach house, so we continue on past this building, to the opposite side of the tiny island. The house is a short walk away, but can also be reached via a golf-cart. There are no cars allowed on Sunset Key, which adds an exclusive and glamorous ambience.

The Grounds:

When you approach the beach house, you’ll recognize the quintessential Key West white picket fence, wide front porches on the 1^st and 2^nd floor, and the ‘widow’s walk’ viewing tower perched on the roof. The ‘paradise island’ grounds of the property are manicured, yet carefree and playful, offering something for every age group.

Most of the outdoor fun is set toward the back of the house, but before we go there, let’s tune into an unexpected bonus, a large open lawn to the right of the house – anyone for beach side kite flying? Walking down the right side of the house, toward the back, we get our first glimpse of the promise for outrageous outdoor fun, a custom swimming pool. An organic oasis design, complete with rock waterfalls and double level pools, fulfills the dreams of kids of all ages – from 5 to 85. Take notice of the iron spiral staircase in the pool garden for convenient access from the 2^nd floor.

Move around to the back of the house, and notice the flagstone patio garden, hammock, and pathway leading to the white sandy beach. Notice in the photo of the beach that you can see downtown Key West set in the back-ground on the other side of the water. The outdoor tropical garden space is made very private with white picket fencing where landscaping is perfectly intertwined and allowing it to seamlessly flow to the interior. Surrounded by all this is the home plus guest cottage, which bespeaks luxurious refined simplicity. Below is a detailed description floor-by-floor.

Interior Layout and Design: This home is full of gorgeous architectural details. When you walk in the front door, the first one you’ll notice is the impressive custom wooden stair case gracefully winding up to the 2^nd  floor. As you take the tour, be sure to look up and notice the 12+ foot open-beam and bead-board ceiling with recessed lighting which is repeated in nearly every room of this distinctive home.

MAIN HOUSE - DOWNSTAIRS:

Our slide show leads you into the 1^st floor of the main house at the front porch. The open floor plan is a unique great-room layout, with rooms and alcoves set on both sides of the house, and the dramatic staircase as the center anchor point. The spacious entrance hall at the left of the staircase, grows into the great-room and runs the entire length of the house. Throughout the downstairs, travertine marble floors tiled on the bias and high-end coastal furniture make a casually elegant statement.  

DOWNSTAIRS right side – The fabulous blue and white coastal décor kitchen spans nearly the entire length of the house, with the sunlit dining room at the back of the house as the end point. An impressive bank of blue bead- board cabinets are built to the open beam ceiling, set in beautiful contrast with the bright white corian counter tops. Well equipped, not to disappoint the cook in your family, the kitchen offers double ovens and all the amenities you would expect in a modern luxury home of this quality.

At the back of the kitchen, the counter top takes an ‘L-Shape’ to create a breakfast bar, which you see in the forefront of the photo.  Just beyond the breakfast bar is the cottage-style dining room, all lit up with single-pane floor to ceiling double sets of French doors that run the entire width of the back of the house.

DOWNSTAIRS left side – Turn left at the back of the house and straight ahead we find the beautiful beach-style media room. Built as a welcoming alcove for the spacious great-room it is set with two comfortable sofas, easy chairs, and 50 inch flat-screen TV mounted to the wall, surrounded by a custom built cabinets. Coastal-style furnishings and artwork are carefully chosen to set the beach house mood.

Now let’s step away from the media-room and take a look at the downstairs bathroom. Continue down the left side of the house, walking towards the front entrance to see the door. A full luxury bathroom with high-end fixtures, it is divided into three rooms joined with pocket doors, providing a vanity sink room, commode room, and tiled double size shower with frameless glass door.

Once in the bathroom, you’ll also find a door that leads to the office / den, the last room in our downstairs tour. The main door to the office / den is the first door on your left as you enter the front door. A perfect place to catch up on some work, you can see in the photo that it also has double French doors leading to the front porch, providing a private entrance.  A quality aero (air) bed can be made up to make this a 6th bedroom with full en-suite bathroom. Tropical earth tones set the mood for this handsome room which is decorated with a ‘Tommy Bahama’ style sofa, and bamboo desk.

MAIN HOUSE - UPSTAIRS – 2^ND Floor -  

BEDROOMS:  The spectacular design of the custom wooden staircase, gracefully winding, turning, and spiraling to the top of the house, creates an uplifting feel as you ascend to the 2^nd floor bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Every bedroom has polished hardwood floors, and is luxuriously decorated and appointed, each with a unique design. The landing at the 2^nd floor is a spacious atrium-style hallway, and your eye is immediately drawn up the stairs that lead to the roof-top viewing tower.  But before we go up top let’s look at the bedrooms and bathrooms.

UPSTAIRS rear – Master Suite - Bedroom 1 - Comprised of three rooms, the elegant master suite runs the width of the back of the house, commanding incredible ocean and garden views. Enter the master suite through the posh private sitting / media room, the center room of the suite, with the sophisticated bedroom adjoining on one side and the luxury bathroom on the other.

Master suite rooms are painted in soothing heritage blue and creamy white and decorated in soft gold tones. The sitting room provides two comfortable swivel chairs so you can relax and watch the built-in 40 inch flat screen TV, and turn around at-will and take in the ocean view. The hand-carved king size bed is placed in the bedroom to enjoy ocean views while lounging in bed. French doors adjoining the bedroom lead you to the 2^nd floor porch at the back of the house so you can open the doors and take in the sea breeze.

The spacious luxury bath, done in travertine marble tile, provides double sinks with a granite vanity top and double wide shower. Next to the vanity a ‘secret door’ leads to one of the most amazing hidden places on the property, a long and wide lattice topped deck that stretches out toward the ocean with a prime view towards the main island of Key West. Set with lounge chairs, this is your place to while-away the hours taking in spectacular sunset views from every angle.

Upstairs left and right bedrooms – Bedroom 2 & 3 – These adorable bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms, are situated on the 2^nd floor providing perfect comfort and serenity for your children to sleep and play (when they're not riding the waterslide in the pool).

MAIN HOUSE - UPSTAIRS WIDOWS WALK – Roof Top Viewing Tower:

We return to the alluring custom staircase to ascend to the roof-top widows walk. From the 2^nd floor, the staircase becomes an artistic focal point, a sweeping spiral design anchored with a grand lathed wooden pole. It really is so impressive that you’ll want to stop and sit on a stair for a minute or two and enjoy the vantage point.

Prominently perched on top of the house, some say the widows walk is their favorite place on the property, and once you get up top you understand why. Like the rest of the house, this feature is luxurious, with the front of the tower closed-in with sash windows, and the rear built as a fantastic open-air covered porch with an enviable sea-faring view.  From this vantage point you have a wide angle view looking across the water to the ‘main island’ of Key West, where you  watch boats and ships coming and going, enjoy the most delicious tropical breezes, and take in one of most famous and beautiful sunsets on the globe. 

GROUND FLOOR – Breezeway / Open-Air Family Room / Cocktail Room:

We now return to the great-room on the 1^st floor at the back of the house, and walk through the French doors to discover the versatile family room / cocktail portico. This room reminds me a little of an Argentinian asodo room, ready to stage an incredible barbeque. Part of the fun of living on a tropical island is to live  outdoors as much as possible, and in this family room you can hang out in your bathing suit, grill, set up a bar and serve cocktails, or have sandwiches and play charades with the children.

GUEST COTTAGE –   

A fabulous feature of the Ultimate Key West Beach House ~ Sunset Key ~ VIP, is the colorful 1-story guest cottage. Separate yet architecturally joined,  the family room portico serves as the breezeway connecting the cottage with the main house. Two additional bedrooms, each with a queen size bed and bathroom, make the 4^th and 5^th bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms for the property. A full kitchen / dining / and living room make the cottage complete.

All the attention to luxury and detail in the main house are found here too. Walls are painted clear beach-tones of pale aqua, white, sky blue, sea grass green. Floors throughout are tiled with the same travertine tile found on the first floor of the main house. Colorful coastal furnishings in bright yellow create a playful feel in the living room / kitchen area. Each bedroom is tastefully decorated in a unique style.

Bedroom 4 - Painted sky blue, and furnished in honey-colored wicker and wood, our slide show photo shows the bed dressed in a multi-colored  spread. An added feature, are French doors  leading from this room to the outside. The colorful en-suite bath will make you smile with the bright yellow paint and black and white checker board tiles that show through the frameless glass shower door. A free-standing sink is artistically set against a tiled splash wall and oversized mirror above.

Bedroom 5 -  Painted sea-grass green and white, this bedroom is calming and subdued. Also made with a queen size bed, dark wood furnishings are in a beautiful contrast to the soft color walls. But you’re also treated to a playful en-suite bathroom, the same design described above for bedroom 4. Except in this bath, soft green walls are jazzed up with bright yellow and white checker board tiles set in the shower. A free-standing sink is set in the same manner with a tiled backsplash and oversized mirror above.

Parking and Transportation: Part of the fun is getting to the island and it continues once you arrive. If you are diving to Key West, parking passes are available to park a car at the covered  parking garage on Front Street. Steps from the garage you’ll find the boat dock where you catch the 24 hour a day water taxi to Sunset Key. The five minute boat ride from the dock is short yet tantalizing enough so that you get the sense of being transported away to somewhere special and glamorous. When you’re touring around Key West, forget about a car and enjoy walking everywhere or consider renting a bicycle – you’ll see more that way!
