Completely hidden behind a tall-weathered garden gate, this artistic Bohemian Luxury Villa is part of a historic ‘secret neighborhood’ of 6 homes on one block. So discrete and tasteful in the exterior layout, no one can guess it is part of an exclusive garden compound. If you’re looking for quiet and seclusion, while staying in the heart of Old Town for a month or more, this is an ideal property.
A Bit of History: This spectacular and authentic garden property was originally designed in the mid-1980’s, by Key West / New York City business creatives, Dick Duane and Dan Stirrup. Recognized as a renaissance design concept, it was featured in the prestigious South Florida Home & Garden Magazine in 1985 We have included pages from that magazine in our photo slideshow above. (Mowery & Hill, “Key West’s Varela Compound,” Jan 1985, pp 69-71).
As you enter the front gate, a steel sculpture by renowned Key West artist John Martini, graces the garden entrance and seems to point to a brick path to the front door. A single French door painted cobalt blue, with stain glass sash windows on either side, sets the tone for the rich eclectic interior.
The front door opens into the light filled entrance hall with a full view of the great room. To the left, we find the kitchen, divided from the living / dining room by a two-tier wooden kitchen / breakfast counter. Natural wood kitchen cabinets and off-white composite countertops are set against bright yellow walls. Recessed ceiling lights assure plenty of light for cooking, and a stained-glass window brings in beautiful light as well as offering an artful focal point. Fully equipped, the kitchen provides a glass top stove with oven, full-size refrigerator / freezer, dishwasher, and microwave.
From the kitchen we enjoy an open view of the great room that encompasses the entire length of the house. Open beam ceilings in the living room are painted bright white, creating an uplifting and spacious feel. Throughout the house, Caribbean tones of blue, yellow, and white, provide the theme for colorful expressive art and furnishings placed throughout the home.
Inside the great room, everything is intriguing and fun. Original ‘Dade County’ heart pine wood floors, topped with vintage red Persian rugs, set the stage for the boho furnishings. We love the great room furniture groupings. The sofa and two easy chairs are a sophisticated mix of two different fabric patterns and textures in blue, yellow, and linen. A large flat-screen TV is mounted on the wall for easy viewing from this grouping. The dining area is set opposite the sofa, where an antique wooden clawfoot table is paired with linen Parson chairs. The dining area is artistically lit with a unique bronze hanging chandelier.
The great room shows an impressive collection of paintings and artwork, and floor-to-ceiling wooden bookcases display unique collectibles. Select antique pieces, including a mahogany sideboard and oriental chest add richness to the bohemian vibe. Double sets of French doors topped with paned transom lights at the back of the room stream in the sunlight and lead to a spacious private fenced-in wooden garden deck. Set with comfortable contemporary lounging furniture and an outdoor dining table, welcome to the ideal place to enjoy the indoor / outdoor tropical lifestyle that Key West is so famous for.
The Bohemian Luxury Villa offers two bedrooms with en-suites bathrooms. Not only does each bedroom provide a full bathroom, but each suite also has a private outdoor deck. This Key West rental gives the option of being in complete privacy in your own bedroom suite, both inside and outside, whether you want to quietly read, relax, or work remotely. We begin our tour with the master bedroom suite.
Master Bedroom Suite: This suite is located at the back of the house. You can access the master bedroom suite from two doorways. There’s an interior door adjoining the great room, past the bookcase near the back of the house. You can also enter this bedroom from the main garden deck through a single French door.
The master bedroom provides a King size bed and a walk-in closet. Décor and artwork for this bedroom reminds us we’re on a tropical island not far from the turquoise sea. Walls are painted seafoam green, a beautiful contrast to the original heart pin wood floors. Bedroom furniture is honey-tone wicker. Bright turquoise mid-Century table lamps add glamor to the room, and the pastel tropical seascape quilt brings the Key West ocean-theme right into the room.
In beautiful contrast, the en-suite master bathroom features a custom hardwood vanity. Fashioned by a craftsman from an antique sideboard, the vanity is topped with contrasting earth-tone tiles. In contrast, a modern clear glass vessel sink is fitted to one side. A large wood framed mirror finishes the look. This bathroom provides a bathtub with in-tub shower.
In addition to adjoining the shared back garden deck, don’t forget there’s also a private fenced-in tiled patio adjoining the master suite. A double set of French doors lead to the private patio. It’s a wonderful feature to wake up and enjoy a full view of your own private back deck from bed.
Front Bedroom Suite: The front bedroom suite also has two entrances. The main bedroom door is at the front of the great room, near the front bookcase. The second entrance is accessed through the en-suite bathroom, that has a common door adjoining the entrance hall of the house.
The front bedroom suite offers a Queen size bed and a reach in closet. Original heart pine wood floors and sand-tone walls are the backdrop for a beautiful eclectic display of furnishings. A combination of a white and honey-tone wicker furniture, an awesome wood Renaissance-style ''X-Cross'' chair, curled metal table lamps, and a colorful Nomad quilt create an authentic and welcoming feel. A large avant-guarde painting hung at the headboard is reminiscent of family members from previous times. The overall look gives this bedroom a curated Bohemian aesthetic.
As with the master suite, the front bedroom suite also provides a private fenced in tiled outdoor patio. Double French doors lead to the space and also create floor-to-ceiling windows to bring natural light in the bedroom.
The en-suite bathroom has traditional red clay tile floors and features a natural tongue and groove ceiling with recessed lighting. It offers a tiled shower with curtain. There is a single vanity topped with a curved porcelain sink with brass restoration fixtures. It is appointed with a complimenting curved wooden mirror and black wood and wicker storage cabinet. Since this bathroom is at the front of the house, it features the aesthetic stained-glass window looking out to the front garden.
Screened in Porch:
Returning to the great room, we peek at the screened-in porch. This is accessed through two single French doors in the walls closest to the dining area. The paned doors double as windows to stream in the natural garden light. Furnished with two blue wicker chairs, this porch can serve as pool-side dressing room, to change or dry off after a dip in the pool. For, when you step outside the from this screened in porch, a garden gate is only a few steps from one end of the pool deck.
The extraordinary grounds on this small garden compound were designed so that residents can have seclusion and privacy in their own homes and decks and choose to enjoy the common pool and deck when they want to. By design, each of the 6 homes features a private deck with a gate connecting to common garden brick paths. Hidden paths meander through mature tropical tree gardens with lush understory. There is a magical feel as you make your way to the common swimming pool and sundeck.
Bohemian Luxury Villa has a revered position in the compound, with two access points to the common pool and sun deck. The exterior door of the screened in porch, leads to a gate, and when opened a few wooden steps to the pool deck. In fact, you can catch a glimpse of the pool from the screened in porch. If you want to meander through the garden to get to the pool, the gate on the main back deck off the great room will take you there.
Swimming Pool and Sun Deck:
A large full-size swimming pool with expansive wooden sun deck, is the central focal point of this small garden compound neighborhood. Lush landscaping around the pool deck creates a tropical paradise. With so few people sharing this space, you may often find that you have it all to yourself. This is a quiet pool setting, by design, staged for relaxation and rejuvenation.
Amenities: There are three private outdoor living areas. Lush tropical gardens throughout the property. Spacious wooden deck adjoining great room is staged as outdoor living room. Each bedroom suite has a private fenced-in garden patio. Multi-cultural art, curated furnishings, brightly colored rugs, and luxurious textiles. Area: While the map locates this property in the Heart of Old Town Key West neighborhood, it so closely borders The Casa Marina neighborhood, that you will find yourself enjoying many of the activities in both areas. This home and garden compound is located in a small exclusive area which has grown into one of the most sought-after neighborhoods in Old Town Key West. In the mid 1900's much of this area was considered the "countryside" of the island, and the modern-day result leaves a legacy of outstanding turn-of-the-century, mid-century and modern architecture with beautiful gardens and more yard space than is typically found in the other residential districts in Old Town Key West.
