About Downtown Key West

Nestled between Bahama Village and Old Town, with the Historic Seaport to the north and Upper Duval to the south, Downtown Key West (sometimes also called Lower Duval) is smack dab in the center of the island’s most popular areas. As the saying goes, it’s all about location, location, location, and when visiting Key West, staying Downtown really has its perks!

Downtown Key West is very walkable (or bikable), and you’re never really more than a few steps from a great meal, some live music, or a fun place to explore. While Downtown itself has plenty to do, its proximity to other neighborhoods also offers easy access to other top attractions.

Overall, Downtown Key West is a great place to stay if you want to be in the middle of it all, especially as a first-time visitor who wants to see the big attractions without driving around.

Things to Do in Downtown Key West

From shopping and sightseeing to pie tasting and walking tours, Downtown Key West offers plenty to do!

Explore Duval Street

Duval Street is the main attraction in Downtown Key West, so you’ll want to spend time strolling, shopping, dining, and, of course, people-watching – or rooster-watching, because yes, you’ll see plenty of those charismatic creatures here too!

This 1.25-mile stretch of road runs North to South, spanning from the Gulf to the Atlantic, and is filled with unique shops, art galleries, museums, historic landmarks, restaurants, and more. It’s also where you’ll find famous bars like Sloppy Joe’s and The Green Parrot, which have rightfully become attractions of their own.

At night, Duval Street is the epicenter of Key West’s nightlife scene. You’ll find live music, a vibrant crowd, and fun cocktails on nearly every corner. And if you’re visiting during one of Key West’s famous festivals, like Fantasy Fest, Hemingway Days, or the Key Lime Festival, there’s pretty much always a party in the street.

Visit Mallory Square

Just a short walk from Downtown, nestled at the north end of Duval Street, Mallory Square is a must-visit. This open-air, seaside square features shops, restaurants, and local vendors. It’s also where you’ll find famous attractions like the Key West Aquarium and Shipwreck Treasure Museum — both favorites among families visiting Key West.

While Mallory Square is fun to visit any time of day, there’s just something special about sunset time. In fact, it’s THE place to be when the sun goes down in the Florida Keys. This famous Sunset Celebration takes place nightly when locals and visitors alike pack the square to watch the sun set over the ocean amid live music, talented street performers, artisan vendors, food, drink, and much more. It’s a must-do at least once during your visit to Key West.

Hunt for Key Lime Pie

You’ll find Key lime pie on nearly every corner in Key West, and it’s no surprise: this sweet, tangy treat originated here in the 1800s and remains the island’s signature dish today. Every restaurant and bakery does theirs a little bit differently and claims to have the best Key lime pie in Key West. Of course, we all have our favorites, but we think it’s best to let the visitors decide.

From mile-high meringue to chocolate-dipped on a stick, there are a lot of different pies to try. Spend some time browsing the bakeries and Key lime pie shops (many are dotted throughout Downtown) and find your favorite. In addition to pies, you’ll also find many other Key lime-flavored treats, from candies and cookies to sauces and wines, and even body care products. The Key lime sugar scrubs make a great gift or souvenir to take back home!

Take a Walking Tour

Want to explore Downtown Key West like a local? Walking tours are a great way to get to know the area and dive deeper into its culture and history. From visiting historic landmarks and hunting for ghosts to eating and drinking your way through all the best cafes, bars, and bodegas, there’s a walking tour for everyone. For those interested in listening to the best music in town on your tour, we recommend this live music tour that combines history with 4 curated spots to discover local artists.

Don’t feel like walking? Take the famous Conch Train, a 60-minute narrated sightseeing tour that will take you through Duval Street, Old Town, Mallory Square, the Hemingway Home, and other scenic spots. It’s a fun, relaxing way to see it all.
