Our own Papa Look-Alike with a 22 pound Mutton Snapper
The Key West Hemingway Look Alike Festival was canceled this July 2020. This was due to COVID-19 risks. But at VHKW we have our own Key West wringer for Papa, M. Scott Irwin. During June, Hemingway's Sloppy Joes Bar, is temporarily closed. But the Atlantic Ocean is wide open. Our 'old man of the sea' headed out offshore on June 9. Along with three burly Key West men caught their limit of mutton snapper. This haul fed lots of friends and family on the island.
Mutton Snapper Lined up at the Dock
Every June, local fishermen fish for mutton snapper in the evening. By the way, women love this sport too. Boats head out where the turquoise reef water drops off into the deep blue gulf stream. The water is pristine right now. Cruise ships are not here to stir up the ocean bottom. Less boat traffic makes a difference in the entire experience.
Fishing offshore Key West at sunset
Nothing quite like going out on a private boat with friends and an experienced captain. This group fished on vessel Looney Tunes. It docks at Hurricane Hole Marina on Stock Island. There are other wonderful charters available. If you want to try live bait fishing offshore, come to Key West. VHKW will hook you up with a private charter. If you love Key West island life, try deep water fishing. Head for the deep sea, and really fish - like Hemingway did! Theres lots more to the island than the downtown bars.
TIPS AND TRICKS: When you visit Key West, be sure to visit the
Hemingway Home and Museum. Ernest Hemingway spent many years living in Key West, and a visit to him home is well worth your time. If you're interested in staying at a property near the Hemingway Home and Museum, you might like our monthly rental,
