Getting There: The address of Sunset Key provides added privacy as well as prestige. It is a private island with 24-hour security, accessed by a 5-minute ferry ride that runs exclusively between the hotel dock on Key West and Sunset Key for guests only. The leisurely ride is on a comfortable small boat, and really makes you feel like you’re getting away from it all.

Once you arrive at the Sunset Key dock, a brick path leads you to reception, resort amenities, and the Latitudes Restaurant and Bar. If you decide to stop and enjoy refreshment before heading to the house, the bar and restaurant has a beautiful portico overlooking the sea,  From there, it is a short walk (approximately 150 yards), to the other side of the island. The Grounds and Home Exterior:

Grounds are graced with perfectly manicured landscaping on a 7,242 lot featuring a variety of mature palm trees, and surrounded by a white picket fenced draped with lush tropical vines. Aged brick pavers and green lawns lead you through the front gate and up to the front porch. But when you walk to the back, it becomes breathtaking. Beyond the private swimming pool garden, palm trees, lawns and privacy hedges, the ocean view beckons you toward the garden gate leading to the beach.

Looking at the exterior of the house, we see it is designed after American Colonial architecture, and this picture-perfect Private Island Key West Beach House - Sunset Key ~ VIP makes a strong traditional statement in this elegant beach setting, offering over 2800 square feet of living space. A classic two-story house, symmetrical in design, it features expansive 2-story covered back porches that overlook the pool garden and the turquoise sea.

Interior Layout and Design:

DOWNSTAIRS: We begin our tour at the front of the home, where the front porch door leads into an open spacious entrance hall. Directly ahead is a traditional wooden banister staircase, leading up to the 2^nd floor.  But before we go upstairs, our eyes are naturally drawn past the staircase, into the great room that extends to the very back of the house.

This grand great room encompasses nearly the entire 1^st floor and is artfully divided into two levels – each spanning the width of the house. The media area and kitchen are directly across from each other on on one level , with a comfortable TV / den area to the right and cottage chef’s style kitchen to the left. Two steps down we find the expansive living room and dining room areas.. Throughout the entire great room, all floors are tiled with sand-tone marble and high ceilings are lit with dimmable recessed lighting, topped with wide crown molding, and finished with ceiling fans. Walls are painted in a contrasting in a khaki tone and multiple windows and French doors are trimmed in white.

Kitchen: Staged for some serious cooking, the upscale beach-style kitchen is as elegant as it is functional. Bright white bead board cabinet fronts are extended to cover the double wide refrigerator / freezer for a seamless look. White corian countertops finish the surfaces. A soft white marble tile back splash, and oversize porcelain skirt sink completes the look. A counter height island is centered in the kitchen to expand your cooking space, and is ideal for serving coffee, wine and hor d’oeuvres. A large pass-through counter connects with the dining room area, making it easy to set up and clear serving dishes. Finally, the walk-in laundry room connects with the kitchen, making it convenient to stay on top of laundry.

Media Room / Den: Directly across from the kitchen, is a comfortable place to flop down and watch TV or read. Furnished with a cushy sofa and easy chair with ottoman, the TV is hidden inside a carved wooden armoire, so you can put it out of site when you want to disengage. You’re sure to find something interesting to read on the bookshelf.

Living Room Area: The spacious living room area is furnished in luxurious traditional beach house style. An 8-foot sand tone sofa and four large natural wicker easy chairs, with coral and sage pattern cushions, make an inviting furniture grouping - spacious enough to seat everyone in the house at the same time! A large glass top coffee table in the center allows for plenty of space to put together a puzzle or to sit comfortably with cocktails. A patterned Dhurrie area rug spans the entire grouping to pull it altogether and adds to the exotic tropical feel.

Dining Room Area: The dark wood 10-foot dining table makes an impressive statement on top of a Dhurrie area rug that matches the one in the living room. The designer chose bamboo for the side dining chairs, and upholstered striped upholstered chairs with arms for both heads of the table. This is a grand dining space that your group is sure to share many memorable meals. At the back of the great room, rice paper floor lamps lure us to the French doors that lead to the pool garden.

Downstairs Bathroom: Before we go outside to visit the grounds, we walk back to the front of the house to take the staircase to the 2^nd floor. Immediately to the left of the stairs we find the exotic downstairs bathroom. You’ll recognize it in our slideshow with the round rope mirror, antique oak chest vanity with hammered copper sink, and large travertine marble tiled shower with seamless glass doors. This bathroom is strategically located to the right of the front door, at the base of the stairs. A perfect downstairs convenience and an awesome place to shower after hanging out at the pool and beach.

UPSTAIRS: Take the staircase to the 2^nd floor to find all 3 bedrooms with en-suite bathrooms. Each bedroom is painted a creamy yellow color and trimmed in bright white. All floors are finished with light hardwood and appointed with area rugs. As with the downstairs, upstairs walls have thick crown molding and recessed ceiling lighting. Windows are appointed with white wood Colonial style shutters.

Master Bedroom / Bathroom / Private Covered Porch: At the top of the stairs, continue straight ahead past the landing to find the grand master suite. If you walk right through the bedroom you’ll find yourself on the expansive private 2^nd floor porch that nearly spans the width of the house. Step outside and enjoy probably the best view of the house. From here an expansive down-look view of the pool garden below and the turquoise ocean beyond.

As you walk through the master bedroom, you’ll see the spacious lounge area with a full-size yellow floral sofa, oval shaped yellow ottoman, and two rattan wing-back chairs with red cushions. Opposite the lounge area is an exotic wood king-size 4-poster bed with tall turned posts. A high bed frame makes the bed all that more fun to climb into. Bamboo and reed dressers grace either side of the bed and serve as spacious end tables for bedside lamps.

As we return to the bedroom door leading to the hallway, we find the en-suite master bathroom to the left, and a spacious walk-in closet to the right. The bathroom offers a wide 2-sink vanity with white granite countertop, Jacuzzi bathtub, and separate shower. Floors are tiled with travertine marble, and a window over the bathtub assures natural light. Another nice feature is the separate commode room that can be closed with a pocket door.

2^nd Bedroom and Bathroom: Stepping back into the hall, we reorient ourselves by putting our back to the staircase. From this vantage point, the 2^nd bedroom is to the left. Offering a queen-size bed, this sophisticated room features a brass nail head white upholstered headboard, set against a dark wood frame. Modern colonial style end tables are topped with brass lamps. A black wicker chair with a green botanical design cushion goes perfectly with the green shag floor rug. The closet has built-in drawers, shelves, hanging space. A flat screen TV is placed on the bureau for easy viewing from bed. The en-suite bathroom is located right inside the bedroom door. It offers a wide single sink vanity topped with white marble, and a bathtub with in-tub shower. A window provides plenty natural light.

3^rd Bedroom and Bathroom: Stepping back into the upstairs hall, we walk past the master bedroom to the opposite side of the house to find the 3rd bedroom. This bedroom features a stunning bamboo queen size bed. The designer added exotic dark wood and rattan end tables and dark green ceramic bedside lamps. The closet design is the same as bedroom two, with built-in drawers, shelves, hanging space, and a flat-screen TV on the bureau for easy viewing from bed. The en-suite bathroom is located just past the closet. It provides a single sink vanity, white granite top, plus a tower cupboard for added storage. This bathroom provides a step-in glass door shower tiled in white. A window invites in the sunlight and offers a nice view of tall palm trees outside.

Returning to the upstairs hallway, we descend back to the 1^st floor. Notice how along the staircase wall, the designer created a beautiful gallery wall of Key West Fantasy Fest posters from five different years. At the foot of the stairs, we’re also reminded that we are in Key West with watercolors of the iconic Key West Custom House and famous Sloppy Joe’s Bar. No doubt, when you’re here, you’ll find time to visit both places.

BACK PORCH / POOL GARDEN / BEACH

Finally, we walk back through the great room toward the ocean side of the house. First, you’ll notice how the French doors are symetrically in line with the swimming pool, which in turn are perfectly in line with the garden gate to the ocean beach.  

On the covered porch you’ll find chairs and tables to relax enjoy the outdoors while protected from the elements. Beyond the porch, the pool deck and garden are hardscaped with brick pavers, and immaculately landscaped with tall hedges, palm trees, and green grass. When you’re ready to go to the beach, follow the coral stepping pads to the gate. This is a perfect little paradise beach to watch the wooden schooners sail by at sunset, and a memorable place to witness a truly spectacular sunrise.

Parking and Transportation: Part of the fun is getting to the island and it continues once you arrive. If you are diving to Key West, parking passes are available to park a car at the covered hotel parking garage on Front Street. Steps from the garage you’ll find the dock where you catch the 24 hour a day water taxi to Sunset Key. The five minute boat ride is short, yet you get the sense of being ferried away to somewhere special and glamorous. When you’re on the main island of Key West, forget about a car and enjoy walking everywhere or consider renting a bicycle – you’ll see more that way!
